Michigan Speakeasy is the co-founder of Detroit City Distillery, a small batch artisanal whiskey, gin and vodka distiller that uses local ingredients sourced directly from farms near their event space and tasting room in Detroit’s Eastern Market. During the pandemic, as hospitals and other essential services were faced with critical shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE), Jerome quickly pivoted the business to produce large quantities of hand sanitizer at their production facility.

The result was an unprecedented partnership with Pure Michigan, who put Detroit City’s PPE product in the hands of first responders and frontline workers, a move that ultimately helped save lives. “It’s a great honor to help the people of our community,” says Jerome.

From Grain to Glass: The Distillation Process at Weiss Distilling Co

During a visit to the distillery last week, I tasted a few of their signature cocktails, including the Weiss-A-Rita, which is basically a moonshine margarita. It’s made with Weiss Lightning whiskey, orange liqueur, simple syrup, lime, hellfire bitters and chili salt on the rim. It’s a delicious, fruity drink that is perfect for the summer.
